Common App
Applying to Private Colleges? Here are some tips for using the Common App:
- Create an account.
- Choose the schools that you are going to apply to and add them to your "My Colleges" list.
- Each school may have "Supplements" (or additional essays) so you need to check to see how many supplements you will need for each of the schools you are going to apply.
- Make sure you have completed your brag sheet (download it to your computer/flash drive from the C&C Center homepage and type your answers, please.)
- You will need to get Letters of Recommendation from two teachers and a counselor. Everyone will ask you for your brag sheet so make sure you have completed this and you can send it electronically to each person.
- You need to give teachers and counselors at least THREE WEEKS notice if you need them to write a recommendation. Do Not wait until the last minute to ask or you may not get a glowing recommendation.
- Each school may have different deadlines so be aware of DEADLINES! Late applications will not be accepted.
- Along with the FAFSA, many private schools will request that you complete the CSS Profile as well. Each school will have a different deadline for this. You will need to stay on top of DEADLINES! The CSS Profile is run by the College Board, so it is NOT free.
- Print out confirmations and applications after you submit them. Keep copies of everything
- Check your email several times a week.
- Apply for scholarships while you are waiting to be accepted.
- Good Luck!
