About Us

Encinal is a 6-12 progressive public junior/senior high school located on the west end of the city of Alameda, on the San Francisco Bay. Built in the 1950s on approximately 17 acres of land, the facility just completed a $50 million renovation in the spring of 2021, which includes a new building on the campus, updated science labs, and classrooms, as well as new outdoor learning spaces.COVID CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE 22-23 SCHOOL YEAR:

Beginning in August of 2021, the majority of students returned to in-person learning, with social distancing recommended, and a mask mandate in place.  Medically fragile students had the option of taking their classes via independent study, which is noted on students’ transcripts.

AUSD’s priority for the 2022-23 school year is to continue to have our students and teachers attending school in person and on campus. At the same time, we continue to focus on reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission by implementing a number of mitigation strategies in accordance with public health guidance. Those guidelines have changed frequently over the last two years, but in general those strategies - what we call  “layers of protection” - fall into three categories: personal behavior and equipment; facility improvements and protocols; and identifying and responding to positive cases.
