One year of world language, visual/performing arts, or career technical education is required for graduation. Two years of world language required (3 recommended) for UC/CSU.

Spanish
Spanish 1

7th - 12th Grades
Spanish 2
(UC/CSU "E" Requirement)
8th - 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 1 or demonstrated proficiency.
Spanish 2 (P) further develops the basic communication skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Cultures of Spanish-speaking areas around the world are reviewed and studied.
Spanish 3

9th - 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 2 or demonstrated proficiency.
Spanish 3 (P) continues studies in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students develop expanded vocabularies. Emphasis is placed on communicating one’s ideas and needs. Cultural topics are investigated through cooking, drama activities, and singing.
Honors Spanish 4
(UC/CSU "E" Requirement)
10th - 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 3 or demonstrated proficiency.
Spanish 4HP is a comprehensive study of the Spanish language with an emphasis on acquiring skills in expressing ideas in both oral and written form. Spanish plays, short stories, and poems are read and discussed. The class studies literature and advanced composition as well as a continuing study of Spanish culture. Students become more articulate in conversational Spanish.
AP Spanish 5

11th - 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 4 or demonstrated proficiency.
The AP Spanish 5 course is a comprehensive study of the Spanish language with an emphasis on acquiring skills in expressing thoughts and ideas in both oral and written forms. Spanish plays and short stories will be read and discussed. The class will also place emphasis on literature and advanced composition. Students will learn to write dramatizations and essays, and become fluent in conversational Spanish.
Note: Students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Exam in the spring.
French
French 1

French 2
(UC/CSU "E" Requirement)
8th - 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French 1 or demonstrated proficiency.
French 2 (P) is a continuation for students of elementary French with an emphasis on oral communication skills. Learning new vocabulary and speech patterns will enable students to express their own ideas in a way that will successfully communicate wants and needs to a native speaker. There will be further study of French culture.
French 3

Prerequisite: Successful completion of French 2 or demonstrated proficiency.
French 3 (P) is a continuation of studies in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students develop expanded vocabularies. Emphasis is placed on the communication of ideas and needs. Cultural topics are investigated through cooking, drama activities, and singing. Reading in the target language is also expanded to include short stories and plays.
Honors French 4
(UC/CSU "E" Requirement)
10th - 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French 3 or demonstrated proficiency.
The purpose of this course is to continue students on their way towards mastery in French, and to interest students in pursuing high-level studies. More complicated communication skills will be learned, and reading and writing skills will be emphasized more than in the first three years. The literature will serve as the foundation for the course, interspersed with small units reviewing grammar, conversational skills, and other cultural studies. As this is an honors class, expectations will be high, and much work will be done independently.
AP French 5
(UC/CSU "E" Requirement)
11th - 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French 4 or demonstrated proficiency.
The purpose of this course is to continue students on their way towards mastery of French, and to prepare students for the AP Exam in the French Language. More complicated communication skills will be learned, and reading and writing skills will be emphasized more so, than in the first three-four years. Literature in French will serve as a foundation for the further development of these skills.
