Visual and Performing Arts

Students will learn to develop their observational abilities and rendering skills.  Students will learn methods of describing objects in terms of line, value, shape, color, and texture.  Principles of light, space, composition, and perspective using a variety of media and techniques will be explored.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Visual Art 1.

Students will continue to develop their observational abilities and rendering skills.  New materials and media are introduced while encouraging students to broaden their range of technical skills.  Students are required to develop and complete projects reflecting their own interests and individual styles.  Projects are presented in greater depth and complexity.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Visual Art 2.

Art 3 is a course designed for advanced and serious art students who are interested in learning to appreciate and develop their individual artistic strengths. Focus is placed on advanced studies in drawing, watercolor, oil painting, acrylic painting, and artistic careers such as architecture, fashion design, interior design, and graphic design. An appreciation of art history with an emphasis on the various styles and arts of today will be covered. Homework and research are required. 

This hands-on course explores the elements of creating pottery and ceramic sculpture.  Students practice techniques demonstrated by the instructor such as clay modeling, carving, and mold making, as well as traditional methods with coils, slabs, and pinch pots.  Historical and contemporary ceramics, course projects, and group and individual critiques will broaden students’ awareness of class as an expressive medium and encourage students to explore their creative resources.  

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Ceramics 1.

This hands-on course is for the student that enjoys the ceramic process.  Ceramic sculpture will be emphasized and students will work on advanced potter’s wheel techniques.  Students will focus on the technical aspects of glazing and glaze information.

Advanced Placement Photography is intended for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art and the medium of photography.  AP Photography focuses on the formal properties of composition, using the elements of art and principles of design, while fostering students’ artistic voice and technical skill.  Students produce a portfolio of photographs that demonstrate breadth, concentration, and quality to submit to the College Board in May.  A limited number of cameras are available to check out, but it is recommended that students have their own cameras.  Students will finish the course with museum-quality mounted prints.

A beginning and intermediate level ensemble for students interested in learning Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion instruments. Students will learn a repertoire of instrumental literature representing various genres, styles, and cultures with expression, technical accuracy, tone quality, and articulation individuality and in ensembles.  The course also includes music fundamentals, theory, songs, performance, listening, composing, improvising, analyzing, and learning how to read standard music notation. Choose between the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or drums. Beginners are encouraged to join! Perform for friends and family throughout the year.

Prerequisite:  Demonstrated instrumental proficiency.

Advanced/Concert Band is designed for the student who wishes to continue the study of instrumental skills on their own instrument. Known as “The Pride of Alameda,” the EHS Jet Band is a performing ensemble composed of woodwind, brass, percussion, and color guard students. We rehearse advanced music and marching formations in preparation for football games, parade competitions, music festivals, and concerts. Students will be trained in marching techniques and advanced concert music.  As part of the course, students will be expected to participate at football games, band reviews, school concerts, traveling performances, and extra rehearsals.  A high commitment to oneself and the band will ensure polished performances and maximum fun for the student.  This course can be repeated for credit.  Daily practice is encouraged. Two years of previous music training is recommended. 

An intermediate-level ensemble for students interested in learning orchestral string instruments. Choose between the violin, viola, cello, or bass. Beginners are encouraged to join! Students will learn a repertoire of instrumental literature representing various genres, styles, and cultures with expression, technical accuracy, tone quality, and articulation individuality and in ensembles.  The course also includes music fundamentals, theory, songs, performance, listening, composing, improvising, analyzing, and learning how to read standard music notation. Perform for friends and family throughout the year.

Prerequisite: Demonstrated instrumental proficiency.

A performing string ensemble comprised of orchestral string musicians. Develop technique, ensemble skills, and perform throughout the year. Students will learn music theory, technical skill on their instruments, and play in a variety of small and large ensembles. String players study/perform both orchestral and chamber literature, developing the craftsmanship and mastery necessary to mold music into a creative expression. Students in this ensemble can expect to have many opportunities to perform throughout the academic year: competitive festivals, concerts, and a bi-annual trip. This class is taken for VAPA credit, and can be taken multiple times for elective credit. Two years of previous music training is recommended.

This course is designed for students with some dance experience.  Students will learn a variety of dance styles:  Modern, Jazz, Musical Theater, African, and Hip Hop.  Activities will include a technical warm-up, positioning, alignment, centering, and balance as applied to turns, falls, extensions, and movement through space.  Students will also study some of the history of dance.  The focus is on developing technique and artistic proficiency.   This is a performance class.  For students in grades 10-12, this class can earn PE credit.
