Career Technical Education

Marketing 1 is a course designed to emphasize the skills needed in sales and service occupations.  Instruction includes mathematics, human relations, communication skills, product and service technology, economics, merchandising, advertising as well as selling and marketing concepts.  Students gain experience through working in the student store and through project-oriented activities.  Students may participate in community classroom and/or cooperative vocational education training experience related to the marketing curriculum and competencies.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Marketing 1.

This class focuses on the economics of business, addressing the needs of students who plan to pursue business and marketing-related interests following graduation.  This course will enable students to understand fundamental economic and business ownership concepts and terms, microeconomics and macroeconomics, and their relationship to business.  The following key elements will be addressed:  implementation of marketing and business plans, economic systems, international relations and the global economy, the measurement of economic performance, management of human resources, and methods and growth of the U.S. economy.

Radio 1, a Career Technical Education (CTE) Arts, Media, and Entertainment course, focuses on the analysis and practice of electronic news gathering, media production, and presentation from a variety of theoretical, philosophical, artistic, and historical perspectives.  Students will produce, market, and broadcast live and pre-recorded segments on Encinal’s radio station, KJTZ/96.1 FM.  Students will develop on-air content and understand the complexities and nuances of broadcast radio journalism.  Students will gain a richer understanding of the ideals, constraints, rituals, and routines of the global news media, while gaining practical experience as emerging broadcast media journalists.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Radio 1.

Radio 2, a Career Technical Education (CTE) Arts, Media, and Entertainment course focuses on operating an urban market radio station.  We build upon skills learned in Radio 1 by emphasizing the operational pieces of radio, including marketing, programming, engineering, and production of a major market radio station.  Students will develop a live on-air morning show for Encinal’s radio station KJTZ/96.1FM and produce 30 to 60 minute pre-recorded segments to be aired after the morning show.  Students will continue to enhance their production skills learned in Radio 1 by developing commercials, on-air jingles, and bumpers.  Radio 2 students will broadcast live at major Alameda events, including but not limited to, the Annual Island Bowl, the Park Street Fair, the Webster Street Jam Festival, commencement activities, as well as men’s and women’s basketball games.  Students will also interview career speakers from the broadcast industry and will compile a personal reel and professional resume.

This course immerses students in the creative process required to produce a quality film.  Participants engage in hands-on video production including camera operation, lighting, sound, script-writing, and editing in six major genres of filmmaking:  silent film, commercial, public service announcements (PSA), documentary film, music video, and fictional narrative.  The course covers the history of film/video and students will develop skills in critical analysis.  Students will learn to analyze the impact of media and film across cultures and explore and evaluate potential career paths in the creative, technical, and management aspects of the industry.  

Prerequisite:  Digital Filmmaking 1.

This course is designed to enable students to gain the professional skills they need to be competitive in the film and broadcasting industry.  The course covers advanced techniques in film, video, and cable television production, acting for the camera, and broadcasting.  Students learn techniques involved in television broadcasting including:  voice and movement, development of broadcast styles, preparation of programs, rehearsal, performance, and evaluating the work of others.  Participants will also develop proficiency in operating complex technical equipment used in post-production and editing.  Students will gain project management skills by guiding their projects from script to screen.  At the completion of the course, all students will produce a professional digital reel for use as a resume.
