High School Athletics

Clearance to participate in high school athletics in the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) is granted to students who meet physical, academic, and transfer eligibility requirements as mandated by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the governing body of California high school athletics.

Physical Eligibility: Online registration with FamilyID and a valid Physical Form (completed, signed, and dated by a physician and parent/guardian) are required for any student to try out and/or participate in athletics at Encinal.

Academic Eligibility: Student-athletes are expected to be “students first” and maintain exemplary character in the classroom by being in class on time every day, modeling mature behavior, and focusing on academics. If any student-athlete falls below a 2.0, they must contact the Athletic Director for the possibility of being granted a one-time probation (only if their GPA is between 1.50-1.99). If probation is granted, there will be weekly progress checks in order to maintain eligibility.

Transfer Eligibility: If your child has NOT attended Encinal High School for the last 12 months, he/she will need to see the Athletic Director for transfer paperwork. Transfer students are NOT allowed to participate in ANY game, scrimmage, or competition until cleared. Participation prior to clearance could result in forfeiture of games and ineligibility. Athletics Calendar

Physical education significantly contributes to students’ well-being; therefore, it is an instructional priority for California schools and an integral part of our students’ educational experience. High-quality physical education instruction contributes to good health, develops fundamental and advanced motor skills, improves students’ self-confidence, and provides opportunities for increased levels of physical fitness that are associated with high academic achievement. Instructional Requirements

Students in grades 1-6 must be provided at least 200 minutes of PE every 10 consecutive instructional days.  Students in grade 7-12 must be provided at least 400 minutes of PE every 10 consecutive instructional days, with two years required at grades 9-12.  In AUSD students in grades K-5 are provided 1 hour (60 minutes) of PE instruction each week by a PE specialist.  The remaining minutes are provided by the classroom teacher through a variety of activities.  Students in grades 6-9 are enrolled in daily physical education as one of their required class periods.  High school students must complete 1 additional year of PE during grades 10-12.

High School Exemption Process

Any AUSD high school student in grades ten (10) through twelve (12) may request an exemption from the graduation requirement of a second year of physical education (Education Code 51241(b)(1)) for either a full year (two semesters) or for a half year (one semester). The requirements for an approval of such an exemption follow:

• Students must pass 5 out of 6 components of the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) taken during 9th grade. PFT certification or documentation must accompany the PE exemption request.
• Students shall evidence successful participation in AUSD interscholastic sports. One (1) seasons fulfill this requirement for a half a year (or one semester) PE exemption; two (2) seasons fulfill this requirement for a one year (or two semesters) PE exemption.
• Students must obtain required signatures to document all requirements are met.
• Verification of participation in AUSD interscholastic sports must be completed by the school’s Athletic Director (AD).
• Exemption requests from current 12th grade students must be submitted to school staff by the end of April.  This includes any exemptions that may include spring sports still in progress.
• Note: Neither marching band nor pep team participation is considered to satisfy exemption requirements of interscholastic sport participation. JROTC participation already qualifies for an exemption from PE.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

The physical fitness test (PFT) for students in California schools is the FITNESSGRAM®. The main goal of the test is to help students in starting life-long habits of regular physical activity.  Students in grades five, seven, and nine take the fitness test. The test has six parts that show a level of fitness that offer a degree of defense against diseases that come from inactivity. The test results can be used by students, teachers, and parents.

Instructions

1. Complete the PE Course Exemption Form entirely, leaving no blanks (includes student and parent’s/guardian’s signatures)
2. Submit the PE Course Exemption form to the Athletic Director to complete and sign. 
3. Submit the PE Course Exemption form to the Counseling Office, where someone will handle and monitor the remaining steps to process the PE Course Exemption.

FYI: The Counseling Office will make transcript changes ONLY after the following has been completed and documented.

• The Athletic Director completes, signs and dates the PE Course Exemption form
• The school's Principal completes, signs and dates the PE Course Exemption form  
• Educational Services staff (District Office) signs, dates, and returns the PE Course Exemption to the Counseling Office.

Once received, someone in the Counseling Office will input the change to your transcript.

Procedure:

1. You must go to a fingerprinting business and pay for your fingerprints to be checked & cleared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) & Department of Justice (DOJ).  Contact the Office Manager if you have been fingerprinted with AUSD in the past.
2. Submit the Live Scan Service (or proof of scan), the Annual Transportation of Students in Privately Owned Vehicles Certificate and Authorization form with a copy of your automobile insurance declaration detailing policy coverage and expiration date, and the Volunteer Agreement Form with a copy of your valid driver’s license to the Office Manager (email or hard copies).
3. The Office Manager will wait for notification from the AUSD Human Resources Department of fingerprint clearance (this can take 1-4 weeks).
4. When the Office Manager has all of the above, they will then notify you and the Athletic Department that you are cleared to drive for away contests, as well as field trips.
